My Lovely New Flat is gradually emerging from the piles of boxes with which it has been filled for the last month. Last night I even took what I consider a significant step towards oh you know houseproudliness and bourgeois respectability and all those Daily Mail/Middle England sorts of virtues by removing the table which had been holding the bathroom door permanently open for the last three weeks. There really wasn't anywhere else it could go, but it did rather curtail the range of guests I was ready to admit to closer friends only, especially if they seemed likely to require the lavatory at any point during their visit. There's only so much looking the other way and stuffing fingers in ears that one can do. Now it - the table, that is - is sitting in the kitchen and getting in the way terribly, but still I suspect this is what the How Clean Is Your House people would counsel had they happened to visit. Thank goodness they haven't. I wouldn't want to know about their bathroom habits.

Anyway, none of this is awfully to the point, which is that I'm just about to set up my phone and net and I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations or ghastly cautionary stories of woe relating to land line/broadband bundles, Tiscali (my currently favoured option) in particular? Any thoughts?

Also, there is a special prize for enormous cleverness and being desperately well-read for everyone who recognises the quotation in my title. But it would be very vulgar to call attention to the fact that you do recognise it, so the way that you qualify for the prize is by just reading the title and then nodding and inwardly smiling to yourself as you sit at your computer and thereby share with me a moment of self-congratulation and smug recognition of our cultural bond.1

1Please note that this competition is not open to anyone whose degree happens to be in Eng Lit as you have a terribly unfair advantage. Just leave it for the Computer Scientists and that sort of person as they'll feel ever so much prouder if they win.

Is the quote from I Capture The Castle? I haven't read it but people keep telling me that I ought to, which you as you know, means that I probably never will.

Gods, yes, there's nothing more likely to put me off a book than being told it's the sort of thing I'd love. Dodie Smith is great, though.

And I'll let you off for mentioning it, because you weren't sure! ;)

That's what I thought too.

The new Cure single is a bit rubbish - none of the lyrical mastery of old, sadly.

My flat has stupidly high ceilings and a seperate lavatory and bathroom. And the bulb went in the loo but nobody can reach the light fitting because there isn't enough room for a big stepladder in the tiny loo and I stupidly broke up with my tall boyfriend without considering his usefulness in lightbulb-changing.

So visitors can either sit (standing would be foolish given utter pitch blackness), in the UTTER TOTAL PITCH BLACK, PROBABLY WITH SPIDERS, or leave the door open.

It's a dilemma.

When I first moved into my current flat the bathroom light wasn't working (needed reqiring). not a problem for me, as, living on my own, I could just leave the door open, but when I had a housewarming party it seemed a bit inappropriate to leave the door open, or make people pee in the dark, so I put a load of candles in the shower, turning it into a sort of lighbox thing; looked kind of cool!

Actually I made a fantastic discovery once while in a pitch-dark lavatory like that: I was opening my post and got to a self-seal envelope and noticed that as you open them they glow with a lovely purpley-blue sort of colour just at the point where the two glued bits are separating from one another.

This is probably something that everybody else already knew, but I didn't at the time, and I was really pleased to find out about it, which I wouldn't have done if I hadn't happened to be doing that. But then I couldn't really tell anyone without having to explain why I'd been opening my post in a pitch-black loo, which, though it made perfect sense at the time, does actually sound a bit unbalanced if you just put it to someone completely cold. But anyway, yes, that shows that there can be virtues to very dark lavatories.

Bit of a bugger about the spiders, though, yes. But isn't Jamie pretty tall? Can he not do it?

You and Nils both!

But, really, it's not v likely that I'd be quoting a Cure song, now is it? I only know Love Cats and that one about boys not crying which I have a sneaking suspicion may be called Boys Don't Cry. Oh and probably some others which I've heard in clubs but don't know they're The Cure. :)

Yeah, Tiscali's looking quite a strong candidate. I'll have a further check and then plump for something, maybe even tomorrow. I do want to get it right, but if 'twere done, 'twere best done soon, as they say.

Good call on banning the Eng Lit people from the non-competition. I mean, we skimmed that title, went 'oh yes, [book title redacted]', and went on to think about how really appalling Romola Garai was in the McKellen version of King Lear.

By 'we' I of course mean 'I'.

Simon, this is brilliant! It seems like a millin years since I've got up to date with anyone via live journal, and when I do I discover you've acquired a flat? Did you buy it? This is fabulous!

I am slowly saving up and up to try for a deposit. The Scottish market uses this difficult 'offers over' thing where prices can exceed the 'guide' price by up to 30 per cent, so it's all a bit of a lottery - and anyway, I'm many months away from having even a slightly respectable deposit. But still! It's so exciting!

Are you thrilled?

Yes, the time finally came in January and I acquired a little place just around the corner from Blackhorse Road station. It's the upstairs flat in a maisonette, although I have a half share of the garden, which is great! I seem to have managed to purchase only just after the top of the market bulge. Ooops! Still, I wasn't buying it as an investment in any case.

Hang in there for your deposit. It's so great when one actually has that feeling of possession!
