Oh god, not content with drifting ever more right-wing, the Cleggist LibDems are just being downright embarrassing with this cold-calling stunt of theirs. Who on earth in a million years really thought that that'd lead to a big rise in LibDem popularity? I'm feeling that disillusionment and falling of crests you get when somebody you really fancy turns out to believe that there is such a word as 'wierd': it had all been going so swimmingly and you were so proud, but actually no, scales-drop-from-eyes time: this is, it suddenly transpires, no grand passion and maybe you're not actually going to introduce them to your friends after all, and abundantly not in any forum where they might happen to be writing about the uncanny, the arcane or even simply the unfamiliar.

But where does this leave the oh-you-know-vaguely-left-liberal-decent-sort-of-pinko-Guardianista to go? Neither Dave nor Gordon are exactly enticing options and both are still to the right even of the New LDs. So err, what's left (in all senses)? Am I going to have to change my Facebook politics status to 'apathetic'? !!! Like the heroine of a nineteenth-century novel, I am disenchanted, dismayed and like to swoon.

And another thing: how come there are so many people called Clegg about all of a sudden? There used only to be Peter Sallis, and he always seemed perfectly harmless and normally rather charming, really, but now they're absolutely everywhere. It's terrifyingly like Invasion of the Body Snatchers and something really ought to be done about it.

But anyway, a poll:

I'm centreish in the sense of being an apolitical liberal humanist who also believes in a free market with appropriate safeguards. And there's nothing like 18-odd years in the civil service to disabuse you of the notion of politics being anything other than bunk.

I don't vote because I live in one of the safest Tory seats in the country, and even in 1997 (when LAODS of people voted) his majority was still bigger than all the other parties' votes put together.

Yes, for all that it's an important right for which people have fought and died blah blah blah, if it really is going to make no difference at all, it really is an exercise in pompous futility.

From a pratical sense, how does this differ fro voting lib dem? :op

I think the cold calling thing is rather bizare but frankly not all that different from the other 'we can do or say what we want because it wont matter' stuff they've done over the years.

I ticked yes to dressing up like a Nazi, just because I'd rather not ban things (right of centre social liberal you see). But I think the potential offense if very much in the context. If someone dresses that way because they idolise Hitler and are trying to found the fourth Reich then that should probably be a matter of concern. But if they just get thier rocks off on silver eagles and black, well each to their own.

Don't be apathetic, be angry! And vote for the least worst option (which probably is still, just about, the Lib Dems, in spite of the calamatous two years they've had)

Nazi chic I do not like. There is a very substantial difference from the general military look and that is the use, in the present, of Nazi symbolism by various deeply unpleasant groups around the world. My conviction on this is made stronger by the fact that, some quarters, some of those who resemble goths have been far too closely connected with groups and ideas of a right wing nature. Meanwhile, I don't think most who wear Nazi symbols etc are doing so with the intention of an ironic sense of re-appropriation or somesuch. Rather they do so out of a rather vaguer sense that it is somehow cool. I think they should think about it a bit more.

Alternatively we should judge people based on what they think, say and do, rather than how they dress. That way lies the whole 'trenchcoat mafia' stupidity.

Yes! People who use the 'I like military style' excuse need to realise that there's plenty of uniforms and styles you can use without hanging swastikas or iron eagles from your lapels.

I feel I should probably clarify my ticking of the 'Conservative' button in this poll. It's not that I have any particular enthusiasm for the Conservative party or their policies as such, or that I'm at all taken in by David Cameron's rather Blairesque reinvention of his party as a fluffier, soft-focus, ecologically-aware band of good guys. They're still, at heart, the same corrupt, hypocritical bunch they've always been, and I think it's going to take more than a shiny new logo and a dynamic, caring new leader who cycles to work to change that. It's just possible, however, that they are marginally less evil than Labour, and right now I'll clutch at any straw that floats within reach.

Now ideally I'd vote LibDem, but unfortunately they seem to be kind of falling to bits on a national level (which is a problem if they propose to govern the country) and also the local branch are a bunch of disorganised clowns. The guy they keep fielding as a candidate is not someone I want representing me, not least because last time round his election leaflet made a point of mentioning that he's an "ardent Roman Catholic and supporter of the pro-life and pro-temperance movements" and I kind of resented him trying to make any of those issues part of his political campaign.

Even on a local level they're rubbish: a week before the local elections this year I wrote to all the candidates saying "ok, tell me why I should vote for you". (The local LibDem website didn't even have the names of their candidates listed on it anywhere.) The LibDem guy (who, were it not for his truly absurd name - Dr Napier Penlington - I'd have suspected of being a fictitious, paper candidate registered purely to make it look like they were doing something) finally replied a fortnight after the elections apologising for the delay, but he'd been in New Zealand for the past month or so.

That's right - on the day that the election took place, he was pretty much as far away from his prospective ward as it's possible to be without making use of rocket technology. Also, his letter seemed to be a content-free rant, heartily and generically agreeing with whatever it was he thought I'd said in my letter, and utterly failing to answer my question ("what do you propose to do if elected to the city council?"). I'm half wondering if it was some sort of clever practical joke.

So, despite their otherwise tempting policies, the LibDems are out. I'll consider them if they get their act together and offer me a candidate worth voting for, but that seems unlikely at the moment, on both a national and a local level.

There's absolutely no way I'm voting Labour after what they've done in the past couple of terms, and what they propose to do in the next one. Also, the local MP is an ultra-loyal New Labour backbencher who does precisely what the whips tell him to do, and apparently regards his constituency surgeries as an opportunity to tell us what we should think, rather than to find out what we would like him to do on our behalf.

A few weeks ago, the Tory candidate came round to chat with his intended constituents, and he actually seemed like a decent sort of chap. He had intelligent things to say about the issues we asked him about (the National Identity Register, housing and regeneration) and he's got a proven track record on the local council. (The candidate at the previous two general elections didn't live anywhere near her proposed constituency, so even apart from her remarks about immigration I wasn't prepared to vote for her.)

So, if there were an election tomorrow, I'd probably vote for the apparently competent guy who seems interested in finding out what his proposed constituents want. I don't think he's got much of a chance, because there's still a lot of people round here who, despite the systematic dismantlement of the local industry, will vote Labour because that's what they've always done and they just won't admit to themselves that it's not the caring, socialist party it used to be. But anyway it wouldn't be a proper election if the guy I voted for actually won.

That's more than a little staggering about the candidate who was in New Zealand! I have a certain amount of respect for the brio of vanishing off to the other side of the world and still expecting people to vote for you, but I'm not sure that it's an approach I'd recommend...

Or maybe liberals dress up like something out of the Romantic period? or some pre-Raphaelite Black knight? the idea doesn't do much for me ...

I think the difference between dressing up as something vaguely authoritarian and a Nazi is like the difference between dressing up as a horror movie killer and Myra Hindley, FWIW.

You missed an option off the last question. It is perfectly acceptable to dress as a nazi or similar to go clubbing provided your uniform is the right size. Bulging jacket buttons and muffin-top jack boots would spoil the effect.

David Thewlis in 'The Boy in te Striped Pyjamas' is proof of the fact that almost anyone looks hot in an SS uniform, especially with the undone buttons and the smoking and I think I'll just go for a lie down.

Dressing up in Nazi garb disgusts me - Soviet too. It's not stylish, cool or interesting, it's just makes the wearer look like a callous dipshit. If people like authoritarian then there's plenty out there that looks such without being ridiculously offensive.

But then I'm rather sensitive about these types of things, rather more strongly after July's visit to Auschwitz/Birkenau.
