Not only is Chinese Democracy actually going to be released (well, supposedly), but final proof that the Beast is rising and the seventh seal has been opened is surely furnished by this statement from the Guardian:

Faced with a weakening economy, the central bank of China today cut its key lending rate for the third time in six weeks, down from 6.93% to 6.66%.

Also, other things:

(1) However used you may be to signing off emails to many of your friends with kisses, it's a really really good idea not to seem over-familiar to the new director of your institute by giving him the same treatment.

(2) I wish I'd known about this in advance. I vaguely know one of the people the article mentions as giving a paper. I'm always a bit embarrassed about the less legit medievalism end of my research profile, which is the category my academic interest in HM/HR falls into, but this sounds really interesting.

Do you luff your new director lots and lots? ;P

I've heard that the new single off of Chinese Democracy (...seriously, I thought I was hallucinating when I first read the review) is absolutely terrible. I've yet to hear it myself, but I'm intrigued. Of course, the last time I saw Axl playing live he sounded like he was systematically having his balls crushed in a vice whilst being set on fire.

having his balls crushed in a vice whilst being set on fire.

He might actually be quite pleased with that comparison. I've seen it said of Tom Keifer (from Cinderella) that he makes the sound of a tomcat caught in a combine harvester yet somehow it's still really good.

I don't know if I'm even going to buy Chinese Democracy. G'n'R's time was great, but it was over a long long time ago. We're better people now.

Oo, shall check out that link when I'm at home.

Yeah, it was in a bad way. Like in the way Carys Matthews from Catatonia sounds like a cat being ironed when she sings live. Just...screechy and painful. Also, he ran out of breath about two songs in and had to sit down. Which was just so sad.

I think I'll probably give the album a miss. He was my first proper, obsessive rock crush and I loved him so much and always will love him CIRCA 1989. Now it's just all a bit...well, it's time to move on, Axl. Everyone else did.

That link is to an acapella metal band. They're...interesting. Kinda cool, actually. But that totally beats any conference on metal ANY day!

I heard the Chinese Democracy news via a food blog, because now everyone in America will get a free can of Dr. Pepper. Speaking of End Times....

Not everyone, DR Pepper are refusing to give Slash or Buckethead a can.

Hmm. Not convinced. I did hear the idea that Axl was going to make GNR sound more rocky-industrial (a la My World at the end of Use Your Illusion II), but, from what I've heard, it seems like the crashing sound of defeat. We shall see.

Yup. And after all this time it would have to be the greatest musical experience in the history of humanity in order to live up to the expectation. Oh dear.

Duff and Slash have had so much the better idea.

Oh, I wish so much I could come to Salzburg when this conference takes place. I wonder why nothing like this has never been organized in Finland (or none that I know of) even if heavy metal has quite a special place in Finnish (sub)culture and metal scene is quite big. A friend of mine dealt with in his doctoral thesis the issues of violence and masculinity in rock music/lyrics... Maybe he is going...
Humm.

Anyway, sorry i never answered your message, I only noticed it so late. Did you enjoy Finland? And I feel very bad; I never got to see you in England while I was there in exchange. I wasn't in London that often and even Slime happened only once. In nine months. Pathetic. I apologise, it would have been nice to see you. But: I'll return!

I love how metal Finland is! It's still such a thriving culture over there. And the record shops are amazing!

Really sorry that I didn't contact you much earlier when I was going to Helsinki: that was silly of me! We didn't get outside Helsinki, really, but I did like what I saw of it, and the Finns I met were good fun. Although very drunken. :)

Definitely give me a shout next time you're over here: my livejournal email address will always reach me and it'd be lovely to meet up again!

"barometer of what is happening at the extreme edges of political and youth cultures".

We could have had a whole session on black metal alone!
